Little is known of Ahmed Agha Kawlali besides that his
father was Hassan Agha Kawlali who was of Turkish origin. Ahmed Agha Kawlali
was the governor of the Greek province of Kavala that was part of the Ottoman
Empire durring the 1800s A.D. and who was known simply as Ahmed Gha. In 1822
Ahmed Agha acquired a six year old slave named Dimitri Panzaris from the island
of Chios as a companion to his seven year old son, Shaaban. In that same year he
was summond by his friend Mohamed Ali Basha, ruler of Egypt, to come to
Alexandria and help build a modern Egyptian navy.
