Ahmed Agha Kawlali was a boyhood friend of Mohamed Ali Pasha who later became ruler of Egypt. At the time Mohamed Ali Pasha took over rule in Egypt, Ahmed Agha was the governor of Kavala which was a Greek territory under rule of the Ottoman Empire.
