Rasheed’s trip to Chios in 2013
It has been established that Ahmed Pasha Rasheed
(Dimitris Panzaris) was born in Greece on the island of Chios and became a
slave in 1822 during the Ottoman Empire’s reign.
The Story
After the
Mamelouks were out of the way, Mohamed Ali establish himself as the sole power
in Egypt and started the significant reforms needed to restore the economic,
and military health of the country. He
offered his brother in law, Ahmed Agha, who was the governor of the Albanian City
of Kavala (now part of Greece) the job of “Commander of the Alexandria fleet of
ships” and the title of “Amir Al Bahr” (Prince of the Sea or Admiral). Ahmed Agha accepted the job and moved to
One of Ahmed Agha’s “slaves” was the young Dimitris
Panzaris. As part of the household of
Ahmed Agha he was given a proper education, and good jobs. On his deathbed, Ahmed Agha gave Dimitri his
freedom.
Today, it is
known that the Greek descendants of Dimitris Panzaris’ sister, Ekaterini, lived
in Alexandria, Egypt. Their names
were
Stella, Sappho,
Helene and Marika Papapandelides
It has also been established that Egypt had an Ambassador
from Greece by the name of Dimitris lampros who is the grandson of Ekaterini
Sister of Demitris Panzaris. The son of
Dimitris Lampros is Alexandros Lampros
who lives today in Athens, Greece.
