Bio:

 

·  Born on December 27th 1899 in Cairo. Her family was highly educated and cultured. Her father, Mahmoud Pasha Sedki, was the Minister of Labor. Hence, she got the chance to learn music since her childhood.

·  She perfected her talent in music throughout her participation in the activities of Article at the American College where she was graduated in 1919.

·  In the following year, she joined Tigerman Institute -a private institute teaching music- where the first generation of Egyptian composars were taught; and where she learned piano and music theories as well as songs and composition.

·  Mrs. Bahiga was involved in social work when she participated in the Egyptian Union, However her significant role began in 1934.

·  She was also involved in the Childhood and Women Protection Associaton.

·  She was elected as the first Egyptian Head of "Cairo Ladies Club".

·  She also represented Egypt in different countries.

·  Bahiga Rashid founded with her husband, Hassan Rashid, and a group of friends the "Egyptian Association of Musicians" in 1942 headed by Dr. Aly Mostafa Mosharafa.

·  She was appointed in 1980 a president of this association which played a significant role in the dissemination of lyric culture and the translation of foreign songs.

·  She touched upon an unprecedented field which is gathering and composing Egyptian popular songs to identify them to the cultivated class and translate them into English for their dissemination out of the country.

·  She shifted to musical composition in 1949 starting by her book "Children Songs", then "Youth Songs". Her approach in such songs reflected her human and musical dimensions through her keenness in selecting themes and words of her songs to fit children and youth such as "Morning Song" composed by herself and "Unexplainable Dream" composed by Talaa Al-Refai. Concerning the musical aspect, it tended to the romantic spirit in highlighting the realm of words and the veteran capacity in tapping the scales to express poetry when associated with piano.

·  Bahiga Rashid was awarded a lot of medals in appreciation of her efforts exerted in the field of social work:

  • Collar of Distinction of First Class in 1966 from the United Arab Republic.
  • Certificate of Merit in 1973 on the occasion of the centennial Anniversary of the education of women.
  • Al-Kamal Medal (Medal of Perfection) of Second Class.
